TELL US, WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Steve Turney and I’m the Executive Director of the Mental Health Marketing Conference, a two-day event that educates the mental health sector about marketing. Personally, I want to help people in need. I also want to promote mental health as part of a focus on whole body-mind health.
HOW DID YOU GET HERE?
I’m a connector and a content creator. Professionally, I run the Mental Health Marketing Conference. The two-day event educates mental health professionals and organizations about consumer marketing so they can reach more people, more effectively. I also work for Emcara Health, a company that cares for vulnerable, at-risk patients by sending nurses and other healthcare workers into the home. I’ve worked across a range of verticals, including the complex healthcare industry and within full-service marketing agencies, SaaS-based startups, and the leading press release distribution firm in the country. Here’s a link to a brief story: I went to a monastery when I turned 40 and came away with a focus on helping people in need.

WHAT DO YOU STAND FOR? WHY IS THIS WORK IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Help people in need. It’s a simple, general statement and there are so many ways to make that happen. No shortage of opportunities. The Mental Health Marketing Conference I run is one expression of that mission via a B2B approach to elevating and amplifying expert voices of behavioral health organizations and mental health professionals. We do that by teaching them about consumer marketing tools and tactics.
WHAT IMPACT ARE YOU MAKING?
It’s a great question. I hope to be making an impact. I can’t say I have a great way to measure that. The conference continues to grow, which is a signal that the market finds value in the experience.
WHAT (OR WHO) INSPIRES YOU TO DO THIS WORK?
There are a host of people who are inspiring to me. Some of them include Harris III from an event perspective, Chris Palombo and Brandon Edwards from a leader perspective.
WHAT’S YOUR VISION, YOUR BIG DREAM FOR THE IMPACT YOU WANT TO MAKE?
Part of my vision includes turning the conference from a two-day event into an ongoing content resource and platform. Additional related events and a more international focus are in the works.
WHAT CHALLENGES ARE YOU FACING?
Scaling the business and documenting standard operating procedures are two challenges that are always on my mind.
WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CAUSE AND/OR THE WORK YOU’RE DOING?
It doesn’t have to be perfect to be amazing. Doing the work consistently every day and taking complete ownership of the work goes such a long way toward making incredible things happen.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE QUOTE OR WORDS OF INSPIRATION TO SHARE?
Change always presents opportunity.
HOW CAN OTHERS SUPPORT YOU OR YOUR CAUSE?
Come to the conference in November (Nov. 15-16 in Nashville, TN). Join that community and conversation. Help us get the word out about the event.
